Regardless of whether you are a temporary visitor or whether you live in Stockholm, there is always a ticket for you.
Choose your ticket based upon how often you will be travelling. If you are going to be travelling a lot during a particular period, then a travelcard with a fixed period of validity and unlimited journeys will be ideal. If you will only be travelling occasionally, a zone ticket may suit you better.
All ticket types are valid for unlimited travel during the period of validity. In other words, you can travel as many times as you like as long as the ticket is still valid. In addition, most of our tickets are not personal, i.e. they are not tied to one particular person; they can be used by anyone – your grandmother, your son, your sister, your friend… But obviously only by one person at a time.
There are some tickets that are tied to one person, and these are the term card, the summer holiday card and the leisure card for children and teenagers.
When you buy your ticket, there are a few things you should remember:
- Ensure the ticket or card is valid for the period during which you will be travelling
- When you purchase a travelcard, you should check that the card is valid from the date you requested
- Always keep the ticket until you get off the bus, have gone through the Metro barrier or have left the commuter train station
- Do not travel using a reduced price ticket or card if you cannot prove that you are entitled to it
Discounts for children and older people
SL has discounts on tickets for young people and those that are a little older. The discounted tickets are called Reduced Price. People under 20 or over 65 can benefit from the discount.
For travelcards with a longer validity than one day, the discounted travelcards can be used by people reaching the age of 20 or 65 during the period of validity.
In addition, those with a “Benificiary’s certificate” [Intyg för förmånstagare] from The Swedish Social Insurance Agency [Försäkringskassan] or foreign early retirement pensioners with written ceritificates, can also travel at a discount.
Unmanned stations
Do you not have a ticket because you got on at a station that was unmanned or had no ticket machine? Explain when and where you boarded to the inspector you meet or when you arrive at a manned station. Your details will then be checked and you can ensure you do the right thing by buying a ticket.
Travelling to Bålsta and Gnesta
For trips with the SL service across the county border to Bålsta or Gnesta, certain rules apply. As these towns are outside the County of Stockholm, an extra fee is required. If you have a travelcard, however, there is no extra charge for travel to Gnesta.
